1. Mayo Photographic Club

Mayo Photographic Club was founded in 1977 by a group of photography enthusiasts and one of the founders, Michael O'Sullivan LIPF, is still a member of the Club. In the early days the members used film to capture their images, but now the majority of members use digital cameras. In the 80's the Club was known as the “Castlebar Camera Club”; however in 2008 the original name was reinstated. Over the years the club has grown from strength to strength attracting members from all over the county and beyond.

The club is affiliated to the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) and down the years Club members have contributed to the running of that organisation. Eamonn McCarthy AWPF was President for three years. Michael O'Sullivan was Vice-President on four occasions and served as Distinctions Secretary for many years. Currently Kevin Murphy FIPF ARPS is a serving member of Council.

Kevin, and our current Chairman Michael Gannon FIPF, both hold the Fellowship Distinction from the IPF, which is a fantastic achievement for what is a relatively small club. Members of the Club are encouraged and assisted in seeking Distinctions from the IPF and it is a measure of the quality of membership within the Club that so many currently hold Distinctions. The benefits to the Club of Federation membership are many as it enables members to tap into the skills and knowledge of leading photographers from home and abroad.

Club activities include: guest speakers, visits to and from other clubs, photography skills training and instruction in photo-editing. Club outings are a regular and popular feature as is participation in competitions at Club, Regional and National level.

The Club has always tried to encourage and support members at all levels. So, whether you are a beginner to photography or want to build on existing skills and experience you will be very welcome as a new member.

The Club meets every Thursday night, in GMIT, Castlebar at 8:00 pm. Click on the Camera icon in the map for more details. The Club 'year' mirrors the academic year as we have use of the room at GMIT during term time. The membership fee for 2011-2012 is €60.00

Sizing your photos for projected image competitions

After you have finished editing and or manipulating your image this is the procedure for preparing images for projection.

First create a folder for your images:

Make a folder on your desktop by right clicking your mouse on a clear area of your
desktop. A drop down list appears, click on the word “NEW” on this list, another
list now appears, click on the word “FOLDER” on this list. An Icon labelled “NEW
FOLDER” highlighted in blue appears. Type a name, such as “projected image” to
rename this folder.

Then resize your images like this:
1. Open your image in Photoshop or Elements

2.In Elements go to Image > Resize > Image Size

3.In Photoshop Full Version go to Image > Image size

4. The Image Size Dialogue Box appears.

5. You must ensure both the resample image and constrain proportions boxes
are ticked.

6. Note which is the largest side of your image i.e. width or height
and in the pixel dimensions box change this figure to 1024.

7. Note that the file size as displayed at the top of the dialogue box reduces
considerably to about 2mb (depends if and how you cropped the image
 earlier).

8. Click the “ OK” button to accept the changes.

9. Your image may suddenly appear physically smaller on screen. If this happens, just go to the
top of screen and click on VIEW > Actual pixels and you will see all is well!

10. The image has now been sized but it needs to be “saved as” a jpeg and named
 as your competition entry.

11. Go to FILE (at top left of screen) click and then click on "save as".

12. The “save as” dialogue box appears. At the top you will see a drop down
arrow, click on this. Then click on “Desktop” on the list that appears. In the
"window" you will see all the folders on your desktop. Navigate to and double
click on the folder you made and named earlier "projected image". That
folder name should now appear at the top of the dialogue box.
13. Now click in the box where it says “FILE NAME”. The file name should be the title of the image and the number 1,2 or 3.
14. Below the FILE NAME box is the FORMAT box. Click the drop down list and select jpeg
and click SAVE. You will be brought back to Photoshop/Elements Workspace and the JPEG Options dialogue box will be visible - pull the slider to 10 quality and click OK.

15. The photo is now renamed and resized and the original is safe
.
